Gov. Pawlenty May Veto Bill Over Real ID

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Governor Pawlenty and Minnesota lawmakers are at odds over how to comply with a new federal ID law.

The Real ID Act is designed to prevent terrorists and illegal immigrants from getting driver's licenses. Starting in 2010, states will have to start issuing tamper-proof driver's licenses and state IDs. Critics say it will cost the state too much and threaten individual privacy.

Pawlenty has threatened to veto a major transportation bill because it includes language that would hamper Minnesota's ability to comply with the federal law.

The Minnesota House has passed the bill. The Senate was scheduled to vote on it last week until its sponsor, Red Wing DFL Senator Steve Murphy, says he withdrew it at the governor's request.
