Voters in Ramsey County won't get a chance to decide this November whether their sheriff is elected or appointed.
The county's Charter Commission failed on a tie vote to put the issue to a public vote. The vote was 8-8, with one member absent. Nine votes were needed to put the question on the ballot.
The issue of whether to elect or appoint Ramsey County's sheriff has been debated on and off for at least a decade.
The upshot of Monday's panel vote is that if incumbent Sheriff Bob Fletcher wants to run for re-election in two years, he can. Fletcher is currently serving his fourth term.
Only about 10 sheriffs nationwide are appointed.
