Rain Helps Quench Minn. Drought, Spoils Plans

(WCCO) Much-needed rain hit the Twin Cities this weekend. This May was the 3rd driest ever. But, the wet weather altered some plans for outdoor fun.

It wasn't exactly strolling weather for this year's Edina Art Fair. Shoppers browsed the booths under their jacket hoods and umbrellas. The smaller crowds mean fewer sales, but artists like Carly Stipe see a silver lining.

"A slow start. At least it's not hail like last year, so it's not the whole day shot," she said.

Other shoppers opted to go indoors, jamming the streets around the Mall of America. But some outdoor plans just couldn't be abandoned, like Riley Struckman's graduation party. They were expecting more than a hundred people at Veteran's Memorial Park in Richfield.

"It's kind of depressing, but then on the other hand, I'm going to get more cards in the mail and less people are going to show up, so they don't get to see the embarrassing pictures of me," said Struckman.

The pavilion at the park provided shelter from the rain, but others weren't so fortunate. At Paul's Rentals they were completely out of canopies. Brian Deremer said it's been a big letdown for last-minute callers.

"Definitely some disappointed people. The rule of thumb is if you get a canopy, it's not going to rain, if you don't get a canopy it's going to rain," laughed Deremer.

WCCO-TV's Sue Turner was lucky enough to get a tent in time for her big going-away party as she prepares to leave the Twin Cities. As usual, Turner knows how to improvise.

"We were supposed to have a backyard party with a little bouncy thing and like some badminton and croquet. Now we're having a tent party with smores and hot chocolate. I hope people wear warm clothes. I have plenty of extra mittens," said Turner.
