'Project Homeless Connect' Brings Aid To St. Paul

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ― People struggling to make ends meet got a little help Tuesday. That's when Project Homeless Connect took place at the River Center in St. Paul.

The event allowed people to go to one place and get information on all kinds of services they might need, everything from housing, to having a phone.

One of the problems for people without a place to live is that many services are run through the county. If a person moves to another county it is difficult to transfer the programs they are in. At the event, homeless people could get medical care and some were even able to get a hair cut.

1,200 people were expected to attend.

"By being here and bringing service providers all in one roof that we can help people access services in a more convenient way, so it's not quite so discouraging for people," said Jennifer Goff with Project Homeless Connect.

"Each and every time that you become homeless, it's tougher to get out because you get discouraged. There's a lot of doors and a lot of barriers," said Ralph Olson with Voices of Change.

About 12 percent of the people who took advantage of the program were families with children. 400 volunteers helped out.
