A Powerball player in northeastern Wisconsin has won $31.4 million, the state's sixth-largest jackpot since the game began almost 20 years ago, lottery officials said Thursday.
City Limits, the Marinette convenience store where the ticket was sold, earns a $100,000 commission. Manager Portia Bowden said customers were buzzing with excitement as they waited for the winner to come forward.
"Everyone's saying the same thing, that they're hoping it goes to someone who really needs it," she told The Associated Press by telephone. "If they don't need it, they hope it goes to a good cause."
The timing is good for the Marinette area, she said, as local factories have been laying off workers.
"We've got so many people saying, 'I should have bought a ticket,"' Bowden said.
The winning numbers in Wednesday's drawing were 5, 15, 25, 30 and 40. The Powerball was 6 and the Power Play multiplier was 2.
Andrew Bohage, a state lottery spokesman, said Wednesday's winner might not be known for a while, since winners often take their time before coming forward.
"A few days wouldn't be unusual," he said.
The winner has six months to claim the prize, which will be worth roughly $20 million after taxes. If the amount is taken as a lump sum rather than in 30 annual payments, it would be worth $16.7 million, or about $11 million after taxes.
"We're just waiting to find out along with everyone else," Bowden said. "It's all very exciting."
Powerball is played in Wisconsin and 29 other states, as well as in Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Wisconsin has had 15 Powerball jackpot winners since the game began in 1992. The largest was a $208.6 million jackpot split among 100 co-workers at Sargento Foods in 2006.
The drawing Wednesday also produced a $10,000 winner in Rusk County.
