Man Shot By Police After 6-Hour Standoff In Hudson

HUDSON, Wis. (WCCO) ― When officers called Verna Koepp and told her to shut off the lights and get in the basement, she had no idea what was happening next door.

"I heard two shots and then I heard six shots," she recalled.

According to police, 43-year-old Daniel Christenson had come home around 5:45 p.m. Saturday and started fighting with his 19-year-old son, Zachary. Investigators say Christenson, who they think had been drinking, then grabbed a handgun and started shooting at Zachary.

Zachary's three friends hid in a closet in the basement, while Zachary called 911 and kept the dispatcher on the line. Although he fired several shots, Christenson missed Zachary, police said.

"Zachary felt that his father was attempting to shoot him," said Hudson Police Lt. Paul Larson.

After about a half hour, Zachary busted out a basement window and the four teenagers escaped. Christenson stayed inside the home for another six hours. He only came out after officers tossed pepper spray inside.

"We tried cell phones, the home phone, bullhorns, knocking on the house, trying to talk, yell through the residence through the windows, we got no response," said St. Croix County Chief Deputy John Schilts.

Around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, police said Daniel came to back door of the home and started shooting at officers. They returned fire and he went back inside. A minute later, he came out the front door.

"He did point the gun at officers; one deputy fired one shot at that point," said Schilts.

Christenson was airlifted to Regions Hospital with gunshots wounds to the abdomen and chest. He remains in critical condition on Monday.

The Polk County Sheriff's Department will look into the case to determine if this was a justified shooting. They expect the results of the investigation within one to two weeks.
