2 Cops Allegedly Shot Guns After Party; On Leave

(WCCO) Two off-duty Minneapolis police officers are accused of shooting their guns after an early Thursday morning party.

Police were called to a home in the 4200 block of Wentworth Avenue South around midnight.

Minneapolis police said when the officer arrived, they found out off-duty police officers had been at the party.

They said two of them fired their weapons after they left.

One neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous, told WCCO he was disturbed by the shooting which woke him up around midnight. But he also praised the responsiveness of the officers who handled the investigation at the scene. He said they were professional and helpful to neighbors who had questions about the incident.

Police are not releasing the name of the two officers, but sources tell WCCO both men are assigned to the STOP unit which is assigned to target violence in the city.

Both officers are on administrative leave while a separate criminal and internal investigation is launched.

If the cases against the two STOP officers find they had been drinking and shooting, a top MPD source said they face a strong possibility they will lose their jobs.

This is not the first case involving STOP officers being accused of misconduct.

Early last year, a STOP supervisor resigned after being accused of drinking on-duty and lap dancing at a downtown strip club. Sources said Officer Patrick Daly was about to be fired when he quit.

Another STOP supervisor was fired over how he handled the incident but was later reinstated.

Chief Tim Dolan declined to comment tonight on the latest allegations against members of the STOP unit.

MPD spokesman Sgt. Bill Palmer said, "We are obviously taking these allegations very seriously. A number of investigators were on the scene last night, trying to determine the facts of the case."
