MN Ag Dept. Asks Consumers To Check Wooden Planter

ST. PAUL (AP) ― The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is asking consumers to check their wooden planters to see if they might be hiding a tree pest.

The planter boxes are made from an ash wood that may be contaminated with the emerald ash borer -- a tree-destroying insect that hasn't been found in Minnesota yet.

Officials say the planters were improperly shipped to Minnesota, in violation of a federal quarantine.

The boxes are labeled "Nature's Own Planters" by Lawson Products. The planters are about 24-by-8 inches in size, and are made from ash tree slabs with bark attached.

The boxes came from a manufacturer in Indiana and apparently were distributed to Lowe's stores in Minnesota.

Consumers who may have bought the planters can call the state Ag Department at (651) 201-6343.
