Town Evacuated When Plant Catches Fire

BREWSTER, Minn. (AP) ― Residents in the town of Brewster were evacuated late Saturday after a fire at the Minnesota Soybean Processors Plant.

Nobles County Sheriff's officials went door-to-door to ask all the town's residents to evacuate. Residents were allowed to return home early Sunday.

Nobles County Sheriff Kent Wilkening says the fire was reported around 10 p.m. Saturday. He says: "There were a couple of explosions and some tanks were on fire."

The cause is being investigated.

The plant processes soybeans into biodiesel, so there was concern about the safety of nearby residents.

Minnesota 60 was closed in the area and the Union Pacific rail line was stopped.

At least 18 people went to an emergency shelter.

The fire was knocked out before midnight, and residents were allowed to return at about 1 a.m.
