20th Anniversary Of Peregrine Falcon Program

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Representatives of Xcel Energy and the Raptor Resource Project are celebrating the 20th anniversary of a program that places peregrine falcon nest boxes on power plants.

Officials will band baby peregrine falcons on Tuesday at the Allen S. King Power Plant in the Twin Cities suburb of Oak Park Heights.

Middle school students are expected to participate in the banding and will also give each of the young raptors names.

Xcel also has a Web site where people can watch the birds at several Xcel plants. The utility says the site has had 126,000 hits this nesting season.

Pesticides such as DDT led peregrine falcons to be near extinction in the 1950s, but power plant nest boxes around the country have been instrumental in saving them.
