A student at Minnesota State University, Mankato was struck and killed by a car early Sunday morning while walking home with another woman following a sorority gathering, said the MSUM media relations director.
According to Mankato authorities,
Rissa Amen-Reif, 22, of Eden Prairie, Minn., was laying in the
traffic lane along 3rd Avenue near Kingswood Drive.
Corinne Overstake, 21, was
trying to help Amen-Rief up when they were struck by an as yet unnamed 17-year-old Mankato
resident.
"Our deepest, heartfelt sympathies go out to loved ones, fellow students, friends and acquaintances," said MSUM president Richard Davenport, "and we extend our wishes for a speedy, complete recovery to the injured student. The campus community is tremendously saddened by this tragic event."
The victims were taken to Immanuel St. Joseph's Medical Center at the Mayo Clinic, where Overstake underwent surgery. A spokesman for Immanuel St. Joseph's said she was in fair condition on Monday.
Police said the accident happened along a non-residential street.
"It is probably opposite ends of our city as far as where the campus is and where the accident is. Part of our investigation is continuing into why they were out in the vicinity there," said Commander Dan Schisel of the Mankato Police Department. "This appears to be a situation that could have been prevented. Our investigation into this will continue."
The university has set up grief counseling, and a memorial event is planned.
This is the second fatal car-pedestrian accident in Mankato in the span of only a few months. Catherine Delwiche, 18, was killed after being hit by an SUV while walking on Oct. 2.
