He thinks it's unlikely he'll have to do it, but Gov. Tim Pawlenty is looking into the possibility of appointing a temporary senator if Minnesota's tight U.S. Senate race remains unresolved.
The Republican governor tells WCCO-AM of Minneapolis that his staff is researching the issue so he's prepared in case it happens.
But Pawlenty calls that possibility "remote and unlikely," because he thinks the race will be resolved before then.

Meanwhile, the state Canvassing Board hopes to finish ruling Friday on the remaining challenges to disputed ballots. On Thursday, Republican incumbent Norm Coleman saw his lead over Democrat Al Franken shrink from 360 votes to just two as most challenges were rejected.
The Minnesota Supreme Court, meanwhile, ruled Thursday that improperly rejected absentee ballots be included in the state's recount. The ruling practically guarantees that the recount drags into the new year.
