Pawlenty Names Wergin To PUC, Opening Senate Seat

ST. PAUL (AP) ― State Senator Betsy Wergin is leaving the Senate to serve on the Public Utilities Commission.

Governor Tim Pawlenty named her to the state body that regulates utilities and telephone companies.

Serving on the commission is a full-time job, so the two-term Republican senator from Princeton says she is resigning her Senate seat as of July 28th.

That means Pawlenty will have to call a special election to fill her seat.

Wergin's central Minnesota district includes the cities of Big Lake, Elk River, Princeton, Milaca, Onamia and the southern part of Lake Mille Lacs.
