RNC Spent Thousands In Minn. On Palin Makeover

(WCCO) Since Sen. John McCain first made his surprise announcement that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin would be his running mate, Palin has been under a great deal of scrutiny.

Now it turns out she received a major wardrobe overhaul courtesy of the Republican National Committee.

The RNC reports that it spent $150,000 in September on clothing, hair, and makeup for Palin and her family.

Much of that money was spent in the Twin Cities.

Palin is favoring sleeker hairstyles and designers clothes these days, most of it courtesy of the RNC.

RNC finance documents show that in September the RNC spent $75,000 on clothes for Palin at the Minneapolis Neiman Marcus, $9,500 at the Minneapolis Macy's and $49,000 at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and St. Louis.

The RNC spent $4,700 on Palin's hair and makeup. Political analyst Larry Jacobs said the highly publicized spending spree will hurt Palin politically.

"Sarah Palin's image as a small town hockey mom has been dealt a big blow here because now she looks like a big spending, citified, shopper," Jacobs said.

Neiman Marcus and Macy's wouldn't comment on exactly what was purchased.

The jacket Palin wore in her now famous acceptance speech is a $2,500 Valentino jacket. It's been widely reportedly the jacket was purchased at Saks.

The clothing wasn't just for Palin. It was also for her husband and kids.

An RNC staffer went to the high end Minneapolis store Pacifier looking for kids clothes. The staffer purchased a $98 striped romper for the Palin's baby Tryg, which he wore later that night at the RNC.

A prominent Minnesota Republican political consultant Jeff Larson may have actually purchased the clothes. According to RNC documents he was reimbursed $130,000 by the RNC. Larson's office is referring all calls to the RNC.

A McCain campaign spokeswoman said it was always the campaigns intent to donate these clothes to charity after the election.
