In preparation for bad traffic in the Twin Cities during the Republican National Convention, a local non-profit is taking action this week to make sure clients don't go hungry next week.
The chefs at Open Arms in Minneapolis make meals for people who can't make their own; people with serious medical problems.
"HIV and AIDS, multiple sclerosis, breast cancer and Lou Gehrig's disease," explained Aaron Keith Stewart of Open Arms of Minnesota.
The meals are frozen, and delivered along with milk, canned goods and produce by volunteer drivers.
More than one-fifth of Open Arms' 500 clients live in St. Paul, where traffic and closed roads could be a problem during the convention.
"The way they're talking, it could be quite a mess over there for people that are driving and walking and delivering meals, obviously," said volunteer driver Dottie Johnson.
So Open Arms is delivering double food this week, to avoid the convention congestion. Clients won't run out of food, and drivers won't run out of time since many make deliveries during their lunch break at work.
"They come for their hour, and they pick and they deliver, so we want to make sure they are able to do that in that hour's time," said Taya Kaufenberg of Open Arms of Minnesota.
Open Arms says clients who don't have enough freezer space for two weeks of prepared meals will get extra canned food and dry goods.
