Deputies Rewarded For Actions In Moorhead Shootout

MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) ― Three Clay County sheriff's deputies have received one of the department's top awards for their actions in a shootout with man later convicted of kidnapping.

Deputies Jason Hicks, Mark Empting and Ryan Carey received the Combat Cross Award on Tuesday for their role in apprehending Vincent Degidio Jr. last April in Moorhead.

Degidio abducted a 23-year-old woman from her Fargo, N.D., home and forced her at gunpoint to drive to Moorhead where he threatened to rape and kill her. She escaped.

Hicks, Empting and Carey got into a shootout with Degidio in south Moorhead, but he ran away. Empting and a Fargo officer found Degidio again. There was another shootout and Degidio was wounded.

Degidio is now serving a 29-year sentence in federal prison.

The federal government took over Degidio's hospital bills when he was transferred to a federal prison hospital in South Carolina. In late October, officials estimated his medical bills were close to $1 million.
