Mom And Dad Soldiers Both Say Goodbye To Son

(WCCO) The Minnesota National Guard held a deployment ceremony Monday morning for a 70 soldier Medivac Unit that will spend the next two months training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and then a year in Iraq.

For at least one family, it also means coping with a unique childcare challenge.

Soon the soldiers of the C-Company, 2nd Batallian, 211th Aviation Regiment will be flying medical missions in Iraq, but Monday, their families got a chance for their emotional farewells.

And for a soldier in the front row, this day was doubly difficult. Sgt. Angelina Kielsa will have to leave 18-month-old Araylius behind.

"I'm going to hopefully go home and spend as much time with my family as I can," she said. "And be back here tomorrow to leave, so, it'll be hard."

Hard on the entire family, with dad also going to Iraq in about a month.

Warrant Officer Michael Kahring just got back from 18 months of flight school in Alabama, and after a little time to bond with his son, he'll be gone again.

"It's difficult for him," said Kielsa. "And it's difficult on Araylius, too. But we'll get through it, all of us."

While they're gone, they'll rely on their families.

Grandma Robyn Kielsa will take care of him, and try to chronicle all the key milestones.

"We're hoping to do the Web cam," she said. "If we can get it to work."

And when Araylius asks where Mommy and Daddy are, Grandma has the answer.

"We're gonna say that they're at work," she said. "They're at work and they'll be back home in a year."
