Friend: Hikers Didn't Consider Themselves Lost

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) ― A friend of two hikers airlifted out of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness said the women didn't consider themselves lost.

Maria Jacenko and Grace Knezevich were rescued Thursday, three days after their planned pickup date.

Jacenko's partner, John Siebenand, told the Duluth News Tribune that the women had lost their maps but were using a compass to move east toward the Gunflint Trail. They had set out to hike the Kekekabic Trail.

Siebenand said they didn't think they were lost, but had left the trail a few times and stopped periodically to rest. After hearing a float plane overhead on Wednesday, they moved up to a ridge on Thursday where they could be more easily seen.

Siebenand said the women were in wonderful spirits after they were picked up.
