Teen Hears, Finds Missing Guard Helicopter Door

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (WCCO) ― The Minnesota National Guard is back in possession of its wayward helicopter door after a 15-year-old first heard it land, and later found it.

One of the Guard's Chinook helicopters lost a door in flight Tuesday afternoon. That same afternoon, despite the heat, teenager Tim Her decided he needed to get out of his Maplewood home.

"I heard a noise from the sky. And I looked up and it looked like a helicopter was flying by and something fell down," he said. That something fell just a few hundred feet from his house but Tim didn't think much of it.

"I thought it was a piece of junk," he said.

It wasn't until he saw the news Tuesday night and heard that a Chinook chopper was without one of its 150-pound doors that Tim knew it wasn't just junk.

Tim called police first thing in the morning after making sure what he heard land in a nearby field was the door. He said everyone around here is lucky it landed where it did because a lot of people jog on a nearby road.

The window on the door was broken, but otherwise it's fine. The Minnesota National Guard isn't sure how the door came off but leaders say that chopper hadn't had problems before.

The Guard said it's working with the Army to figure out why the door came off.
