Charity Takes Minn. Vets To See Memorials In D.C.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― Some Minnesota veterans got a free trip to Washington, D.C. Saturday to visit several war memorials. The "Honor Flight" is put on by Sun Country Airlines.

It's a one-day excursion that allows veterans to take in memorials for wars they were a part of.

Bill Marhoun served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He has terminal cancer and spent the Thursday night in the emergency room. He said he fought through to make it to the airport Saturday morning.

"Don't know how to accept all this, 'Congratulations, thank you,' all that stuff. It's been a long time, a long time a-coming," said Marhoun.

After arriving in Washington, the veterans got on a bus and started visiting more than a dozen war and military memorials.

Later in the evening, they'll be welcomed back in the Twin Cities with musicians from the 34th "Red Bulls" Infantry Division Band.
