Gov't May Pull Millions From Healthcare Program

(WCCO) Health insurance for some working Minnesotans could be in jeopardy after the federal government threatened to pull millions of dollars in funding.

An emergency meeting was held Wednesday morning with the health and human services committee for Minnesota Care.

Minnesota Care is the public health insurance program that provides health insurance for working Minnesotans who can't afford private insurance.

On Aug. 12, the state was told by the center for Medicare and Medicaid services that renewal of some federal waivers granted over the past 15 years would change.

That prospectively means that $129 million dollars would be lost over the next three years, which translates to approximately 17,000 people losing their health insurance.

The state initially had until Sept. 10 to respond to the federal proposal. They have been given a two-week extension for negotiations.
