AP: Erik Paulsen Wins U.S. 3rd District Seat

(AP) In the 3rd District, Paulsen defeated Democrat Ashwin Madia, and will replace Republican Jim Ramstad, who held the seat from 1991 until deciding to retire after this year. The seat has been in the GOP's control since 1961.

With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Paulsen had 48 percent of the vote compared to 41.4 percent for Madia.

"We had a hard-fought campaign," Paulsen, a former state House majority leader, told supporters. He said that he and Madia had the same goal: "To ensure that America's promise remains the beacon of hope for our children and our children's children."

Paulsen "will be a good representative for our district," Madia said early Wednesday morning.

In a telephone interview, Madia predicted that Paulsen will legislate as a moderate and follow in the footsteps of Ramstad.

"I think in the end our message was right, people in this district are looking for a new direction," Madia said. "I wasn't the right messenger for that, but I think the message is right on nonetheless."
