Hearings Start On Proposed Metro Transit Fare Hike

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Public hearings will begin Monday on a fare hike proposed for Metro Transit buses and light rail.

The Metropolitan Council says fuel costs have more than doubled since the last fare hike, which came in 2005.

Under the proposal, fares would increase by 25 cents per ride starting October 1. Metro Transit also wants to extend the morning rush hours by 30 minutes.

Metropolitan Council spokesman Steve Dornfeld says higher gas prices have increased ridership, but he says mass transit operating costs have also increased.

Officials are considering a second fare increase for 2009 depending on what funding it gets from the state and how much gas prices change.

Northtown Mall in Blaine will be the site of the first hearing Monday night.
