Melrose Police Officer Who Died In 1919 Honored

MELROSE, Minn. (AP) ― A late Melrose police officer is being honored as a fallen officer -- 88 years after his death.

Anton Gaetz died after he was assaulted by a suspect on July 5, 1919. He developed cancer from the injury and passed away in September of that year after operations.

After a battle in the courts, Gaetz's wife, Helen, won compensation proving the assault was a contributing factor to her husband's death. But the Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Association just heard from the family about it this year.

Gaetz was to be recognized during a ceremony last night at the state Capitol on National Law Enforcement Memorial Day.
