Man Dies In Police Custody, Bag Found In Throat

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the man as 38-year-old Marcus James Burrell, whose address wasn't immediately available.

A man who was arrested for driving while intoxicated died in police custody early Wednesday morning. According to police, while trying to give first aid, paramedics removed a plastic bag with drugs from the man's throat.
Minneapolis Police pulled over a suspicious vehicle at 23rd and Grand Avenues at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. The man driving the vehicle was arrested for suspicion of DWI, handcuffed and seated in the back of a patrol car without incident.
According to police, very shortly after being placed in the patrol car the man exhibited signs of a medical emergency and EMS was called to the scene.
Officers began first aid on the man, and when paramedics arrived they removed a plastic bag of suspected crack cocaine from the man's airway.
Police said the man was transported to North Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
