Former U.S Rep. Tim Penny Has Radio Show In Waseca

Waseca, Minn. (AP) ― Former Democratic congressman and 2002 Independence Party candidate for governor Tim Penny now has his own radio show in Waseca.

"I try to ask the questions Ive heard people asking around town," Penny said of his show, "It's Your Call" on KOWZ-AM. The show is "somewhat political, but low key," he said.

Penny said he tries to emulate the interviewing techniques he's heard in Minnesota Public Radio and doesn't ask softball questions, but he also said he doesn't set up his guests for a "gotcha" interview.

Since his first show in September, past and present government officials, community leaders and high school students, among others, have stepped up to the microphone.

The owner of the station, Lynn Ketelsen, invited Penny to host the show and let's him choose the guests and the topics.

"We've had just a terrific reaction to Tim's show, from people in Waseca and the larger region," said Ketelsen.

Ketelsen said the two plan to meet in the next two weeks to talk about the future of the show, which is being considered for statewide distribution on Linder Radio stations.

"Hes a person that transcends politics," Ketelsen said.

Jeff Stewart of Owatonna is one fan. "I think he brings a perspective to the Waseca and Owatonna area that you don't get regularly. He has experience in Washington, but yet hes a local guy," he said.
