Police Find Fermenting Corn In Maplewood Apt.

Maplewood, Minn. (AP) ― Police are wondering what to make of a still and several gallons of fermenting corn found in a Maplewood, Minn. apartment.

Chief Dave Kvam said the only still he's ever seen was on the 'Beverly Hillbillies.'

Officers haven't talked to the apartment dweller yet because he didn't appear to be home Monday. In Minnesota, an unauthorized still is prima facie evidence of illegal alcohol production.

The manager of the apartment complex said the resident calls himself a chemical engineer and teacher.

Kvam said it's possible the man has a license to make ethanol -- which is essentially the same as moonshine. But it seems unlikely such a license would be granted for operation in an apartment.

The case will be forwarded to the Ramsey County attorney.
