MN Twins Hand Out Hankies At Children's Hospital
by Sue Turner
St. Paul (WCCO) ―
If you didn't have Twins fever yet, you've very likely been overcome in the past few days. The Twins tied the Detroit Tigers at the top of the American League Central Division last night after their win over Kansas City.
They've clinched a spot in the playoffs, but, with only a handful of games left in the regular season, the race for the championship has come down to a photo finish.
Friday is the first night you can buy a Homer Hanky for $1 at the Metrodome. Saturday, you'll be able to get one at any of the Twins Pro Shops. About 200,000 of them were made up, but it was a few special kids at St. Paul's Children's Hospital who were able to get them first.
"Gotta cheer for us, yeah, gotta cheer," said Twins player Michael Cuddyer.
It doesn't get much sweeter than Michael Cuddyer hanging out with babies and thoroughly enjoying himself.
"You're a Twins fan. How are you? There's a smile," said Cuddyer, talking to a newborn baby.
The only sight as cute is Lew Ford discussing his team's playoff strategy with another patient at Children's Hospital.
"I heard you went to the game Tuesday night," said Ford to his young fan.
"They're good players," said Mitchell Rice.
For kids who are battling big diseases, Cuddyer and Ford's visit was no small gesture.
"Any little thing that can break up the stuff that happens with all the treatments, it's just great," said Lori Rice, Mitchell's mother.
The players get a kick out of it too.
"It's very gratifying. So many times, people brought me joy. To return that gift, it's very rewarding," said Cuddyer, who just won the Pohlad Award for his community service with the Twins. He's also been nominated for the Clemente Award which is an award for community service in all of Major League Baseball.
