Officer Mourns Canine Partner's Death
St. Paul (WCCO) ―
A St. Paul Police K-9 died Friday, after becoming ill while chasing a suspect, police said.
Tyson, a 3-year-old German Shepard, was in the middle of an extensive chase where he started to have trouble breathing.
The dog was brought to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Hospital, where he was diagnosed with Laryngeal Paralysis, which is a rare tracheal disorder.
The St. Paul Police Department was unaware of Tyson's condition.
On Thursday, Tyson took part in an intense chase where he subdued a dangerous suspect armed with a knife. St. Paul Police believe his actions may have saved fellow partners from physical harm.
Tyson and partner, Officer Nick Kellum have been a working together since March 2004. In that time, the team has tracked and apprehended several suspects.
A burial for Tyson will be held at the St. Paul Police K-9 Cemetery site at the Timothy J. Jones Canine Training Facility.
The St. Paul Police Department has asked the St. Paul Police K-9 Foundation for assistance in getting another dog for Kellum.
