Civil War Wallet To Reside In Litchfield
Litchfield, Minn. (AP) ―
A Civil War wallet found on the Gettysburg battlefield has found a permanent home in Minnesota.
The wallet will be on display at the GAR Hall in Litchfield -- one of only three remaining Grand Army of the Republic halls in the U.S. A dedication ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, June 16.
The wallet belonged to James Bryant, a member of Company D of the First Minnesota Volunteers Infantry Regiment. Bryant was wounded in the thigh during Gettysburg and lost his wallet on the battlefield. It was found by a Confederate soldier, Private David Morgan Rise.
A descendant of Rise's from Michigan -- Sarah McKay -- tried last year to locate any descendants of Bryant so the wallet could be returned. A few family members were located, and a descendent of Bryant's agreed to donate the wallet to the GAR Hall in Litchfield.
A family representative is expected to attend the event. Civil War re-enactors will be on hand as the wallet is presented for permanent display.
