The University of Minnesota has hired a consultant to study the vibrations from the proposed light rail line that would go down Washington Avenue in Minneapolis.
If the nearly $900 million project goes forward, those trains would roll within the shadow of university research buildings that house sensitive, high-tech equipment.
Earlier this month, the university hired California-based consulting firm Wilson IHRG to help answer its questions about how the trains would affect that equipment.
A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Council, which is overseeing the Central Corridor planning, has given the university the results of its own vibration study.
However, university spokeswoman says it wants its own consultant to assure its researchers that it's serious about protecting their life's work, which could be hurt by the trains.
