University of Minnesota officials are now supporting a plan that routes the Central Corridor light rail line through Washington Avenue on the Minneapolis campus.
The university's Board of Regents on Friday voted 11-1 to approve the resolution, which acknowledges that the street-level Washington Avenue route would cost the least.
The university had previously opposed the route, instead pushing for the line to go through Dinkytown just north of the Minneapolis campus.
But the Metropolitan Council voted late last month to pursue the route on Washington Avenue, which would put trains through the East Bank campus and shut the street to cars.
Board chairwoman Patricia Simmons says the regents decided to support the route after extensive study. She says officials were assured that there would be adequate funding in the project to ensure safety and protect environmental and university resources.
