St. Paul Libraries Consider Fees For DVD Checkout

ST. PAUL (AP) ― More public libraries in the Twin Cities area could start charging fees to patrons checking out movies on DVD.

The library systems in Anoka, Ramsey and Dakota counties already charge fees for borrowing DVDs. Now the St. Paul Public Libraries are floating the idea.

Some of the suburban libraries charge 50 cents a day or $1 a week for DVD checkout.

The proposal in St. Paul is part of the city's 2009 city budget, which is still being worked out. Most city departments are under pressure to keep spending flat.

The St. Paul Public Library has a collection of 49,000 DVDs, but only 11 percent of them are popular feature films. Officials say educational material would continue to be free.
