Legal Challenge To DNC Restrictions Is Over

Denver, Colo. (AP) ― A months-long legal challenge to security restrictions for protesters during the Democratic National Convention is over.

The American Civil Liberties Union says Thursday it won't appeal a federal judge's ruling that upholds the city's restrictions because the law since the Sept. 11 attacks has shifted in favor of security over First Amendment rights.

Judge Marcia S. Krieger's ruling says the establishment of a demonstration zone and parade routes don't infringe on free speech because they're content-neutral and don't affect the protesters' ability to express opinions.

ACLU-Colorado legal director Mark Silverstein says the lawsuit did yield several victories, including getting the city to issue parade permits in a timely manner.

In similar lawsuits in Minnesota about the Republican National Convention, a federal judge rejected one protest group's attempt to get closer to the Xcel Energy Center.
