A routine check on a license plate by an officer in Lakeville on Monday led to a stand-off with the driver of a stolen truck in the middle of a lake. It also led to a morning long search through the suburban neighborhood for the man's passenger.
Beverly Rudiger loves the view of Lake Marion from her kitchen in the Lakeville home where she has lived for more than 40 years.
That's where she watched a stand-off between police and a suspect who stood in the middle of a shallow part of a lake for almost an hour Monday morning.
Police say the man, 40-year-old Daniel James Fuller, and his girlfriend bailed when they tried to arrest him driving a stolen truck. The vehicle was stolen over the weekend in Minneapolis.
"I don't know what was holding him up because it's cold out there," Rudiger.
During the hour-long standoff, Fuller smoked a cigarette and officers waited on the side of the lake. He finally surrendered to fire rescue crews who brought a boat to the lake.
"Cold water temperatures and the cold air temperatures got to him and he decided it would be more prudent to get into the boat," said Lakeville Police Chief Tom Vonhof.
Fuller was taken to a local hospital to see if he had any problems with hypothermia after spending so much time in the chilly water.
While Fuller was in the lake, his passenger was running from yard to yard, looking for a ride.
By late morning, she showed up on the deck at Beverly Rudiger's house.
"Just begging to get in and I have a daughter behind me begging her to stay out," said Rudiger. "All of a sudden she pushed the door open and pushed right past me."
Police were waiting and grabbed the young woman when she ran out the front door.
After both people were in custody, Rudiger seemed remarkably calm about everything she saw from her kitchen.
"I'd rather have the girl here than the boy. When you are my age, you don't get too concerned unless they have a gun, and they could have, I suppose," said Rudiger.
Vonhof said Fuller had a felony drug warrant out of Dakota County and a traffic-related warrant from Scott County. He now faces more serious charges including auto theft and fleeing police.
