After 6 Days, No Sign Of Missing Autistic Man

GRANTSBURG, Wis. (WCCO) ― The family of a missing man with autism is praying for a miracle. 25-year-old Keith Kennedy has been missing since June 15, when he wandered away from Trade Lake Camp in the Grantsburg area of Northwest Wisconsin.

Saturday, the search area expanded. Each day the search is becoming more desperate and each outing just as difficult. There has been no sign of Keith Kennedy since last Sunday night, but hundreds of searchers are not giving up.

Busloads of volunteers have been coming to the camp to help comb nearby woods and fields. It's especially challenging since Keith can be scared off by loud sounds and probably will not respond to his name.

Keith also had a kidney transplant in 1995 and needs medication. His mother says there's a chance he's in a weakened state, comatose, or maybe hiding somewhere, doing alright.

"We keep hoping. That's why we need to find him. We just need to have some closure on this," said Linda Kennedy.

Linda has been a special education teacher in St. Paul for the past 30 years. Many of her colleagues and students' families have been coming to help day after day.

"She's always been a support for everybody else, and I think we're all here to support her and her family in finding Keith," said school colleague and volunteer Karen Johnson.

On this sixth day, more than 400 people turned out despite the tough conditions. Ashley LeMay spent 13 hours searching Friday and is back again.

"It's rough terrain, smelly mud, swamps, sometimes it feel like you're going through rose bushes, like people have scratches all up and down their arms," said LeMay.

Linda said the energy and kindness of volunteers keeps them going as they struggle through what's been a living nightmare.

"It's so hard knowing that so much time has passed without turning up any clues," she said.

There is still a need for volunteers at Trade Lake Camp. They begin at daybreak Sunday and continue through sundown. Keith may be drawn to buildings, so people in the Grantsburg area should check their cabins, barns, and outbuildings.
