Minnesotans Celebrating Close To Home This July 4

(WCCO) High gas prices have a lot of folks celebrating Independence Day close to home.

The average cost of regular unleaded is around $3.99 a gallon.

WCCO talked with some Minnesotans who decided to splurge right here at home, instead of spending a lot out of town.

Joe Harty is the owner of Harty's bait shop on Medicine Lake.

"So darn busy we ran out of bait," he said.

The place was busy with people celebrating the Fourth of July by fishing locally.

"It makes just as much sense to do it close to home as it would be three hours away from home. We consider the fish the same no matter what," said Dave Gustafson.

"I went up to Canada fishing in May, and we had four boats in the lake for six days and we spent $1,200 in gas, and It cost me $300 in gas for my car to get up there," said Rob Pope. "It's definitely an impact."

AAA predicts a 1.3 percent decline of Americans traveling out of town for the Fourth of July.
