A Minneapolis police officer just cleared in the death of a suspect is now accused of fighting with a female friend.
Officer Jason Andersen fatally shot 19-year-old Fong Lee in July 2006 after a brief foot chase.
Early Sunday morning, police arrested Andersen in Sherburne County. According to Andersen's lawyer, Andersen and a female friend were both cited for fifth-degree assault after some kind of traffic incident.
She was cited and released but Anderson was booked into jail.
In a statement to WCCO, Andersen's lawyer Fred Bruno says "he is confident he (Andersen) will be exonerated."
Andersen's arrest has brought back painful memories for the Lee family.
"This is kind of like a flashback of 2006 all over again," said Shoua Lee, Fong Lee's sister.
Police said at the time of the shooting Fong Lee had a gun. Andersen shot him eight times.
Lee's family sued the city, claiming Andersen used excessive force. They claim the 19-year-old was unarmed and allege an officer planted a gun next to his body.
In May, the family lost the case against the city and a Hennepin County grand jury cleared Andersen of any criminal wrongdoing when they reviewed the shooting.
Andersen was released from the Sherburne County Jail and will be in court next month.
"I'm not overjoyed. I can't feel much for him right now. I just don't feel anything for him," said Fong Lee's sister.
A spokesman for the Minneapolis Police Department said Andersen is on administrative leave, pending the outcome of his assault case.
