Study: Iron Range Facing Housing Crunch

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) ― A new study says the Iron Range will need an additional 720 to 2,700 housing units by the end of 2013 to accommodate expected economic growth.

The study was prepared by the St. Paul-based engineering and planning firm Bonestroo for the Range Readiness Initiative's housing team.

The firm examined housing needs in 31 communities and 54 townships covering more than 2,000 square miles in northeastern Minnesota.

Iron Range Resources launched the initiative last year. It's a public-private partnership anticipating the region's needs if the mining industry keeps growing.

According to different scenarios, the growth in permanent jobs could range from nearly 1,950 jobs to more than 6,100. Temporary jobs would also number in the hundreds.

The housing market study was released Tuesday during a Range Readiness Initiative event attended by approximately 240 people in Grand Rapids.
