Iron Range Needs Housing To Meet Worker Boom

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) ― Housing might be tight on Minnesota's Iron Range, because of a boom in mining and power projects.

The projects could create thousands of new jobs in the next few years. And those workers will need homes.

If all six of the large-scale projects fall into place, a new housing study finds the Iron Range could come up short as many as 2,700 housing units.

The housing report is one of the first public achievements of the Range Readiness Initiative created a year ago. The group is now trying to figure out how, where and when to build those homes.

The study finds a lot of room to improve housing that's already in place, and to build new homes in dozens of towns from Grand Rapids to Ely.
