The board for the Central Iron Range Sanitary Sewer District met only briefly before calling it quits because the district doesn't legally exist anymore.
The board suspended operations Monday after board members heard from attorney Mary Frances Skala, who recommended a halt to the planning of a regional wastewater treatment plant.
She says work can resume once newly proposed district legislation is approved and communities once again agree to participate in the sewer district.
The problem is the communities in the district had until Jan. 6 to submit to the state a resolution of support ratifying the 2002 legislation creating the district.
Resolutions were received in time from Hibbing, Chisholm, Buhl, Kinney, the Ironworld Complex and Great Scott township.
However, the paperwork from Balkan township was received by the state a day late. That caused the 2002 law to expire, taking the board's legal authority with it.
