In the Twin Cities gas prices are about a dime cheaper than the national average. That has more and more people trying to get every mile possible from each fill-up.
Hypermiler Sean Welch of Coon Rapids gave WCCO's Esme Murphy a lesson on how to drive more efficiently.
Welch gets 100 miles to the gallon in his two-seater Honda hybrid. He said anyone can improve their gas mileage.
Welch had Murphy drive a 19-mile route through Anoka County. He attached a scan gauge to the engine of the Toyota RAV4 news vehicle she was driving. The first time through, with Murphy driving how she would normally drive, the gauge calculated 33.7 miles per gallon.
That sounded great to Murphy but Welch quickly pointed out that the gauge wasn't accurately calibrated. He did say even thought the calibration was off it would be able to measure any improvements registered the second time through the same route using his techniques.
And so Murphy went through the route again following Welch's every instruction.
Lesson one: no air conditioning.
Lesson two, three and four: slow down!
Welch said always attempt to go below the speed limit by at least five miles. He said at stop lights he shuts his engine off to save fuel. And in stop and go traffic he says try to never come to a complete stop, he says restarting your car eats up too much gas.
The end result with the second trip through was 39.1 miles per gallon. That's a 5.4 mile per gallon improvement.
