Hydrokinetic Power Coming To Hastings

ST. PAUL (AP) ― An old idea, creating power from moving water, will be new again on the Mississippi River at Hastings.

A hydrokinetic station is being built on the river. A turbine suspended from a barge will hang about three feet below the river's surface. The current's force will spin the turbine blades, running a generator to produce about 100 kilowatts of electricity.

A second unit planned for installation in the spring would double output.

A Texas company, Hydro Green Energy, is building the station. Vice President Mark Stover says the systems can work in small-scale settings like Hastings or in much bigger projects.

The company plans studies to see whether the turbine harms fish.
