The damage tally from the tornado that tore through Hugo last month has exceeded $22.3 million for 341 homes in the hardest-hit neighborhoods.
The new estimates from the Washington County Assessor's Office include only the Creekview Preserve and part of the Waters Edge developments, and are estimates only of structural damage to homes -- not contents or other personal property.
Assessors found that 39 homes in those neighborhoods were destroyed and 302 others were damaged. The average damage was about $65,496 per home.
Kevin Corbid, director of the county's Property Records and Taxpayer Services Department, said an even larger area in Hugo, even extending out to Scandia, sustained storm damage, but only Waters Edge and Creekview Preserve are classified as disaster areas for now, which makes them eligible for property tax relief.
