Two days
after a tornado destroyed her house and devastated her neighborhood, Beth
Brisch made a decision: houses or not, her Hugo neighborhood was going to
celebrate National Night Out.
"I
said, 'we're still having it ... it's important, and we have to have it,'"
recalled Beth. "We've always had it in our cul-de-sac and I decided that this
year is no different."
The
location of 159th Circle North
was hit hard by the Memorial Day weekend storm. Out of the nine homes on
the cul-de-sac, six were destroyed.
However, Brisch
is a woman on a mission.
"We've got
a lot to do today," she said to her kids as she walked into in to Festival
Foods Tuesday to pick up a donation of bottled water.
Tornadoes
destroyed Brisch's house, but not her community spirit.
"We just
knew this was an event that we had to have," said Brisch.
While their
homes are being repaired or rebuilt, she and her neighbors are staying elsewhere
around the north metro.
"Roseville, some are White Bear, some are Forest Lake," Brisch
said.
No matter
where they're staying, they're coming home Tuesday to 159th Circle North.
"Typical
National Night Out -- burgers and dogs and everyone getting together and having
fun," said Brisch. "Just, we don't have our houses to hang out
in."
This year Brisch
extended the National Night Out invitation beyond the cul-de-sac. She posted
fliers in local business. She's not sure how many people will show up -- 20
or 200.
Brisch
understands what National Night Out is all about and it's not food.
"I
figure if we run out of hot dogs and hamburgers, we're still not gonna run out
of hugs and concern and love and friendship," said Brisch. "That's the
important part."
