Bill Has Coleman Housing Relief Provision For Vets

WASHINGTON (AP) ― A Senate-approved housing bill includes a provision by Senator Norm Coleman that would give returning veterans more time to work out mortgage problems upon their return.

The Senate approved the overall bill on an 84-12 vote.

The provision by Coleman, a Minnesota Republican, would give returning veterans nine months to work out their mortgage problems -- up from three months.

Coleman initially wanted the limit to be one year, then settled for half that in a compromise with Republicans. The final limit was set at nine months when the bipartisan legislation was finalized.

The overall bill, the Foreclosure Prevention Act, will be redrawn by the House when it takes up the measure.
