Home That Exploded In Carver County Is Total Loss

LAKE TOWN TOWNSHIP, Minn. (WCCO) ― A house exploded in Lake Town Township, Minn. just before 8:30 p.m. Friday night.

"I heard a big explosion. Boom! The house shook," said Waconia Firefighter Drew Gulden. "So I ran to the end of the driveway, looked left, and the house was on fire."

The Carver County Sheriff's Office said the house was at 9330 Lennis Avenue, which is just off Highway 10, just east of Waconia, Minn.

"I just saw flames. That was it. Just flames," says Firefighter Gulden.

No one was home at the time of the explosion and no one was injured, said Randy Sorensen, the fire chief of the Waconia Fire Department.

The explosion blew debris all across the yard and into neighboring yards.  The explosion and subsequent fire nearly leveled the house.

"When we came down the road, we could see a column of flames in the air," said Sorensen. "Everything is a total loss: the house, the structure, the contents -- a total loss."

Neighbors called 911 and when firefighters arrived, the structure was fully engulfed.  Firefighters have not been able to enter what's remaining of the house, because it is so unstable. The debris was still smoldering three hours after the explosion.

"From the garage all the way down, the whole house was involved, the garage included. There was no roof standing.  There were hardly any walls standing when we got there," said the Fire Chief.

Authorities believe natural gas is the cause of the explosion.  Sorensen said the family told investigators they had someone in to check out the furnace recently.
