There was a very special birthday party at the Minnesota State Fair for man who spent many years selling a Fair tradition.
Across the street from the WCCO booth is the foot long hot dog stand. One of the guys that sold dogs there for more than 50 years was back to celebrate his birthday.
Walter "Speedy" Spidahl started selling foot long hot dogs at the Minnesota State Fair in 1947.
Before that, he sold ice cream sandwiches for a nickel.
Speedy stopped working at the booth a couple years ago but he still comes back to celebrate his birthday.
This year, it's a big one -- he's 90. When he first started selling the foot longs, they only cost a quarter.
As for his favorite combination of condiments on a foot long...
"Well I started eating the foot long thing with what I call Norwegian fries you know," said Speedy.
"So the fried onions are Norwegian fries?" asked WCCO's Don Shelby. "Why do you call them that?"
"Because the French fries are not any more French than the onion is Norwegian," said Speedy.
His favorite part of the Fair is the regular customers.
"I like all the people that keep coming back and remembering," said Speedy.
Speedy has sold miles of foot longs. He said his hot dogs taste so good because they use sheep casing.
