Girl's Pet Horse Mutilated, Killed In Long Prairie

LONG PRAIRIE, Minn. (WCCO) ― Sheriff's investigators in a rural Minnesota county are investigating who's behind the mutilation of a Long Prairie, Minn. horse.

Katie Symalla, 11, discovered her horse Savannah dead in the field by her family's farm Saturday afternoon.

"She was my best friend in the whole wide world," said Symalla. "I never wanted her to be lost."

Symalla's mom, Victoria Monti, described the killers in harsh terms.

"Very demented, very sick, have no feelings whatsoever, who they're hurting, what they're hurting," she said.

The family last saw Savannah on Friday at 5 p.m., and arrived home Saturday just before 2 p.m.

"I just want justice for whoever killed my horse," said Symalla. "I worry they'll kill other horses, or go and kill some people."

According to Monti, the family rescued the horse five years ago. She said the violence was so brutal, she tried to keep her daughter away from the image.

"They skinned her face and took her eyeball," said Monti. "What they cut off, they took with them."

Investigators with the Todd County Sheriff's department took photos of the abuse and they are now trying to figure out who killed the horse, and why.

"They attacked our family is what they did," said Monti.

Since the attack, 11-year-old Symalla said she hasn't been able to sleep in her own bedroom. She said she's worried that whoever killed her horse, may come after her.

"The windows are really easy to break," she said. "I usually sleep out on the couch or with my mom."
