Two Harbors To Decide Fate Of 'Honking Tree' Trunk

TWO HARBORS, Minn. (WCCO) ― The trunk of the "honking tree" is sitting in a state Transportation Department yard in Two Harbors awaiting a community decision on its fate.

Department spokesman John Bray says the state technically owns the remains of the 113-year-old tree that was felled by vandals last week.

However, the state intends to give the trunk to Two Harbors. It was a local tradition to honk when passing the towering white pine tree on Highway 61 south of town.

Mayor Randy Bolen Jr. will hold a community meeting next week to solicit ideas for the best way to preserve what's left of the tree.

He says he's already gotten many e-mails and phone calls about the tree. He says people are treating the death of the tree like a funeral.

The Lake County sheriff is investigating.

According to the editor at the Lake County News Chronicle, the tree's vandalism is "like a death" in that area. People have asked whether the newspaper plans to run an obituary for the tree.
